Student Credit Cards FAQ

When your student is getting ready for college there are a lot of things to worry about. How they are going to be able to get the things they need while they are away from home shouldn’t be one of them. Giving your student a credit card specifically for them to use to get items and supplies they require as well as every day expenses can make it safer for them as they do not need to carry large amounts of cash, or keep money in their rooms where it can be easily stolen. You can also control the spending a lot better as you will be able to see exactly what your student is using the money for when the statements come each month. Cash is easily squandered on items you may not approve of and other than hoping they tell you what they spent it on you will never know. They can’t avoid the reality of the credit card statement that comes in.

Setting limits because of the tracking ability is much easier. Set out guidelines detailing what the student credit cards are for. You can even give them several for different needs such as one card for travel expenses like gas and repairs on their auto, another card for living expenses such as groceries and utilities, and a card dedicated to actual school expenses such as books, lab fees, and even registrations. Many times you can get student credit cards that have the financing for their school applied to them so that it is easier for your student to register for all of their classes and make the payments on time.

Keeping track of the costs of your student’s education for tax purposes is easier with student credit cards too thanks to that handy monthly statement. Many parents are now using student credit cards for their high school students as well so that the dangers of carrying cash are one less thing they have to worry about. Students are much more apt to be mugged by other students for cash than a credit card. Should the unthinkable happen and your student is hassled for their credit card always be sure to tell them to hand it over, do not risk getting hurt whether it is for cash or a card, their life is much more important than any amount of money. Should they lose or have their student credit card stolen, however, it is easy to call the bank and have the card cancelled and replaced. Most student credit cards have theft protection on them as well and any charges that may be made before you can call the bank will not be charged to you.

These are just some of the wonderful ways student credit cards can benefit your students and make your lives easier. Having limits and controls on how they spend their money alleviates your concern that they will have the resources to get what they need and at the same time keeps them from spending frivolously and coming back asking for additional funds so they can continue to live. Student credit cards save you a great deal of money and give you peace of mind.
